Why Designers don’t like making Powerpoint Presentations (PPTs)?

A PowerPoint presentation is a presentation created using Microsoft PowerPoint software. The presentation is a collection of individual slides that contain information on a topic. PowerPoint presentations are commonly used in business meetings and for training and educational purposes. Such presentations are also used for pitching ideas, selling concepts, showcasing products, and for promotional activities.

Working with several teams and individuals for the last 17 years in Designing I have seen one thing, which is common amongst all the designers I worked, that they don’t like making PowerPoint presentations for others on a regular basis. It frustrates them to the core.

Making a PowerPoint presentation for oneself for showcasing one’s work is still fine but designating a Designer solely for making powerpoint presentations on a regular basis is not fine. The designer’s job is to make templates and give it to relative departments so that they can work around those created templates and showcase it accordingly. However, when non design departments shrug off responsibilities of making presentations, are not willing to learn to work on preset-templates and start giving excuses — meaning, they are simply trying to pass on such jobs to the designers. And design teams end up wasting numerable man hours in just doing copy paste jobs.

“We are designers and not Screwdrivers”

I remember when I was introduced to computers I was told to learn MS (Microsoft) Office first before I pursue any Design skills, which I learnt so diligently. But today in this digital age if someone don’t know how to format a text, how to import and crop an image or how to copy paste in the templates provided by Design — it means that they are not serious about their jobs. Designers are not there in the company for data entry works and not hired to do mere copy paste jobs. Strict decisions are required by Senior heads to stop such requests coming to Design.

Designers are those who designs, specifies the structural properties of design objects, creates tangible or intangible objects, products, processes, laws, games, graphics, services, and experiences.

Do not kill their creative energies by overloading them with these mundane jobs. Designer’s work is identified by beautiful templates that he has created and not by how many decks/presentations he has made after working in those predesigned templates.

Do not put weight on his wings. Let the Designer fly.
