What do you give importance to more — Intelligence, Creativity or a combination of both?
Intelligence and Creativity are mental abilities where Intelligence is an ability of an individual and creativity requires different thinking. A normal healthy brain is a pre-requisite to intelligence, however talented people with bipolar disorder may also show periodic bursts of creativity. Studies have shown that highly creative people are highly intelligent but highly intelligent people are not always creative.
Sometimes high intellect can be an obstacle for some creative abilities. In a room full of adults if you ask the present audience to raise hands if they feel creative? There will be only few who will raise hands. The reason is that we (adults) tend to equate creative ability with artistic ability but this is not what Design Thinking tells you about Creative ability. The ability to ask right questions, participate in something where you might not be good at, to instill the creative confidence in you and to motivate in accepting challenges to take on problems which don’t have clear answers — is Creative ability.
Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.”
Imagination is the door to possibilities. It is where creativity, ingenuity, and thinking outside the box begin for child development. Let loose the child in you. Don’t stop yourself from asking questions.
Creativity is the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality. Creativity is characterized by the ability to perceive the world in new ways, to find hidden patterns, to make connections between seemingly unrelated phenomena, and to generate solutions.
Patterns are hidden every where in form of informative data, which inspires you to learn and understand its vast possibilities to showcase it in a creative and simplistic way. More insight into these patterns can be easily understood by following points:
Data: Abstract data exists in different forms and is widely available through different resources.
Information: When data is collated and segregated as per its attributes — it becomes informative.
Knowledge: When data information is laid out in a clinical way to understand it’s architecture and existence.
Creativity: When the flow of knowledge takes a shape and convey the same meaning of information available in a different yet understandable way.
Creativity is… Being able to think above, beyond and around challenges in order to exceed expectations and excite the senses. — Jo Littlefair
Due to project timelines and constant workload, we all sometimes compromise on the good intelligent designs where the creative element is always missing.
This design is not at all a bad design as it looks pleasing to the eyes, defines a proper hierarchy of the content with good play of white spaces and right font utilization. However, this design is something in common with all the other visual designs that we see daily in our lives and we are accustomed to it.
Whereas on the other hand, the Creative design has an element of a surprise and based on an out of box thinking. This design makes you think about the subject from different lines or perspectives. After having a glimpse of it you may want to look at it again and again, as its innovative, different and a design that you have never seen before. This design portray the exact motive that you want your design to convey.
Let’s not afraid to fail.
Let’s not stop ourselves from asking questions.
Let the child in us be set loose.
Let’s come out of our comfort zone.
And let’s not kill the creative ability inside us.
Following are a few examples of some good designs and creative design throwing up for your perusal.
