From the very first game to the last, how each team played — what they scored, on home ground or away, won fairly or by D/L (Duckworth–Lewis) method, how many preliminary round points scored before moving on to the next round, and more.

My main motto was to provide as much as information of the recently concluded VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 in a small yet understandable graphic. There are tons of websites all around the globe where you could find all the information on a single click. However, the Graphic Design gives you the power to showcase a deliberate selection/creation with a combination of text, data, illustrations and colors.

Information is just bits of data. Knowledge is putting them together. Wisdom is transcending them.

My main challenge was not the data, as it is freely available on ESPNCricInfo, but to plan what exactly I am going to show in the graphic. I could easily go and segregate the information into different sections and form it into an infographic but that is not what I wanted to do. I wanted to show one piece interlinked graphic that leads to the very first match when the tournament started to its last match where it ends.

After the first sketch on the left, I realized that all eight teams played two matches against each other and not one.

During the planning stage I realized that I have to show as many as 56 no. of cricket matches played between eight no. of teams in the preliminary round and 60 matches in the whole tournament. How I could depict those 56 cricket matches played with the local team’s playing home ground was also a big ask for me, considering some of the team’s home grounds were also shifted (Chennai Super Kings to Pune and Kings XI Punjab to Indore) for various reasons.

Who played who, how much the teams scored during the matches and who won, which teams qualified for the next rounds and with what points, with just 4 centuries scored during the whole tournament and finally who was the winner. You will get to see it in the IPL 2018 Flashback graphic at the top.

2015 Cricket World Cup graphic, which I made three years back.
